Tomato Onion Chutney

This tomato onion chutney is made with a very easy method. But you can change any ingredients as per your taste.

There are several ways to make this onion tomato chutney and you can add more spices as per your taste.

This is a south Indian chutney made with tomato, onion, and some spices.

You can eat this chutney with Idli, dosa, upma, vada, and even if you want you can get this with chapati also.

This onion chutney made with very simple and basic ingredients.

I have used very few spices in it due to my kids.

You can add more spices or you can add some crushed peanuts to enhance its taste.

Every Indian household loves to eat chutney and made with their own ingredients as per their taste.

Tomato onion chutney is the best south Indian dish to accompany Idli,Dosa and vada.

When I first saw this chutney, I thought it would be very spicy but it turned out very tasty.

The mixture of tomato, onion, chana dal, and urad dal, comes out very well and gives a great taste.

Method:

  1. Heat 2 tbsp oil in a pan on a medium flame and add 1 tsp cumin seeds.
  2. Add washed chana dal and split urad dal and fry for 1 minute until turns golden.
  3. Now add chopped onion and tomato and fry it till it turns soft.
  4. And add 1 tsp salt in it.
  5. Switch off the flame and let it cool completely.
  6.  Add this mixture in the grinder jar and grind it very smooth paste if needed add 2 tbsp water in it.
  7. Now heat 1 tbsp oil in a tadka pan and add mustard seeds, curry leaves and if you want then add dried red chili also.
  8. Put this tadka on chutney and your chutney is ready to serve hot.

You can refrigerate this chutney in an airtight container box for 10 days.

The taste of this chutney increases even more once it cools down.

This recipe is a very easy and fast recipe to accompany with south Indian Idli and Dosa. Tomato chutney is a very basic chutney made with tomato and onions and with very basic steps. Each person has their own recipe of this tomato chutney some may use more spices in it but I like to make less spicy due to my kids.
My kids love this recipe with dosa and Idli. You can make any changes in this chutney by adding some more ingredients according to your kid's taste or as per your taste. This is a very basic chutney you can use this chutney with your vegetables also you will definitely love it.

Equipment

  • pan
  • Mixer Grinder
  • Tadka pan

Ingredients
  

  • 3 tomato
  • 2 onion
  • 2 tbsp Chana dal
  • 1 tbsp Split urad dal
  • 2 tsbp Refined oil
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black pepper
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds

Instructions
 

  • Heat 2 tbsp oil in a pan.

  • On a medium flame now add 1 tsp cumin seeds and roast for few seconds.
  • Add chana dal and split urad dal saute for 2 minutes until aromatic and deep golden.
  • Add onion and tomato and add 1 tsp salt and saute for 5 minutes on a medium flame until soft and mushy. The raw smell of tomato and onion go away after it's cooked well.
  • Switch off the flame and let it cool completely.
  • Blend it until smooth with using 2 tbsp of water in it.

  • Now heat 1/2 tsp oil in a tadka pan and add 1 tsp mustard seeds in it. {you can add curry leaves and dried red chilies also} as per your taste.
  • Now spread it on chutney and enjoy this chutney with idli and dosa.
